O N C A is proud to be hosting ‘The Vanishing Act’, a solo exhibition of new paintings by artist Jaye Ho.

The Vanishing Act, is a powerful series of work that addresses war crimes, focusing on the plight of ‘Comfort Women’ in Japanese-occupied WW2 countries and sexual violence survivors seeking justice. Ho paints victims and their remains, survivors and perpetrators. She censors, protects and condemns these images with a mask of prisms, geometric shapes or pixels.

Ho’s vivid paintings will be exhibited in a two-part exhibition which will be on display in the window of the ONCA gallery and also available to view online. The show coincides with the 20th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security on 31 October. The resolution acknowledged the disproportionate and unique impact of armed conflict on women and girls. Part one will be available from Tuesday 6 Oct to Sunday 25 October and part two will be accessible from Tuesday 27 October to Sunday 22 November.

ONCA will be hosting an online Meet the Artist Event with Jaye Ho on the 7th of November at 2pm. Tickets are free and available to book via the ONCA Website. This event will be BSL interpreted.

On November 21st at 2pm, Jaye Ho will be hosting an online panel discussion that will explore the relationship between art and conflict. Panel speakers include artist and former mental health campaigner Dr Errol Francis, award winning Iranian animator Majid Adin, and transitional justice expert Hernando Cáceres. Tickets for this event are also free and available to book via the ONCA Website.

About the artist

Jaye Ho (b. England) is an identical twin, born in Oxford to Singaporean and Malaysian parents. She currently lives in Hastings. Jaye studied at Central Saint Martins (BA Fine Art 2003) and The Slade (MFA Fine Art 2006), exhibited nationally (including London, Birmingham, Hastings) and internationally (including Dublin, Krakow, Sydney). Recent shows include ‘Dazzleship NN201’ (2017) where she painted a Hastings fishing boat in Dazzleship camouflage, and Nigel Cooke’s ‘Telescope’ show at the Jerwood Gallery (2019). ‘The Vanishing Act’ is her first show in Brighton (2020), and is funded by Arts Council England. Jaye works for the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office and has worked on human rights since 2017, including on the International Criminal Court, Freedom of Religion or Belief, and the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative.

The paintings in the show reflect her personal opinion, not the UK government’s.
