Trans Awareness Week

13 - 19 November 2021

13th – 19th November 2021 is Trans Awareness week (TAW), a time for reflection, a time for celebration, and a time to come together as a community to highlight the issues faced by trans, non-binary and gender diverse people. It culminates with Trans Day of Remembrance on 20th November.

2021 has been the deadliest year on record for trans people and in light of this Mermaids, a UK charity supporting trans, non-binary and gender variant young people and their families, says:

In today’s climate, we believe that awareness of the challenges faced by trans people is not enough. So we’re calling on our supporters, and the wider community, to use TAW to mobilise, to move, and to transform #AwarenessIntoAction

Here are some helpful resources & toolkits outlining how to take action and show up for trans people:

Glaad article about the history of Trans Awareness Week

Disclosure is a documentary by executive producer Laverne Cox and director Sam Feder that chronicles over 100 years of trans representation on screen, from silent film to Dog Day Afternoon, The 40-Year-Old Virgin to Pose. According to a study from GLAAD, over 80% of Americans don’t personally know someone who’s transgender. That means most people learn about trans people from the ways they’re depicted in movies and TV.

This documentary is a really helpful educational resource and additional toolkits are available here.
