Catherine Lee: Ties That Blind

17 March 201719 March 2017

Catherine Lee, Ties That Blind

Private View / Friday 17th, 5pm

Solo Exhibition by painter Catherine Lee, 17th – 19th March

Catherine Lee is an emerging artist specialising in painting and drawing, based in Brighton. Catherine’s practice explores the relationship between colour, movement and abstraction through expressive mark making and raw brushwork. She incorporates multiple mediums ranging from oil on canvas, acrylic and spray paint to create a fluid movement and intense impressions. Her work highlights the emotions associated with passion and romance using free flowing paint contrasted with harsh disruptions.

Throughout her more figurative work, Catherine illustrates the connection between the viewer and the artwork, pushing an extreme of the male gaze, the female form and associated desensitisation created in modern culture. The female figures are eroticised and sensually exaggerated to express the over sexualisation of women in the media, photography and film, contrasting with notions of vulnerability and desire.

Catherine’s paintings are given a new light where the viewer can assess the strength of an image and the role that the figures play, through painting the forms using expressive brushwork and displaying them in the public eye. Influenced by the work of Marlene Dumas, Cecily Brown and Willem De Kooning, Catherine strives to highlight the power of provocative images when contrasted with familiarity, through a vibrant colour palette that engages the viewer.
Ties That Blind will showcase Catherine’s new work taking a fresh approach commenting on the political climate and recent events in the media.
