Exhibition and workshops, 10 – 15 February

Printmaker Beatrice von Preussen spent two months in the high arctic in summer 2017. During an expedition on a tall ship exploring the Svalbard archipelago, Bea joined scientists measuring volcanic thermal springs and searched for fossilised worms’ teeth to post to the Natural History Museum.

This is an exhibition of that expedition, delving into the sketch books, photo albums and diaries that Bea made during her research for an illustrated children’s book about nature in the Arctic Circle.

Come and hear bearded seals singing beneath the ice, find out about fossils, and follow Bea’s  journey exploring the extraordinary and unique environment of this frozen land.

Bea will offer hands-on workshops giving children the opportunity to explore science and nature in creative ways. Come and print your own polar bear, handle rocks which have been buried beneath rivers of ice for millions of years, and have a go with real scientific equipment to make your own arctic sample kit. Everyone is invited to make an artistic contribution to our Imaginary Natural History Museum.

Adults can learn more about Bea’s journey and about the practice of printing in the arctic at evening talks.

Exhibition open // Saturday 12 – 6pm, Sunday 12 – 4pm, Monday & Tuesday 1 – 4pm, Thursday 12 – 6pm
