Education for Sustainable Development

We design and deliver creative projects and activities that promote education for sustainable development and social change.

What we do

At ONCA, we’re committed to facilitating creative spaces where people from all backgrounds can collectively develop inclusive solutions to social and environmental problems. We design and deliver creative activities that promote education for sustainable development.

“Education for Sustainable Development allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future. Education for Sustainable Development means including key sustainable development issues in teaching and learning, for example: climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, poverty reduction, and sustainable consumption.

“It also requires participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behaviour and take action for sustainable development. Education for Sustainable Development consequently promotes competencies like critical thinking, imagining future scenarios and making decisions in a collaborative way. Education for Sustainable Development requires far-reaching changes in the way education is often practised today.”

Our Stories

Who we work with

Schools & Youth Organisations

Over the years, ONCA has worked with many local schools and artists with to develop and deliver a variety of workshops and activities. We collaborate with schools and youth groups across Brighton and Sussex on projects that build confidence and connection with the environment.

Academics & Students

ONCA specialises in arts-based learning and creative environmental education outside the formal education sector. We also support scientists, researchers and students to connect with artists to deliver projects about environmental and sustainability issues. Some of our most recent projects include: System Change Hive, Cli-mates and Atmospheres of Violence.

Community Groups

In 2019 we were granted funding by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Environment Programme to deliver a diverse and inspiring programme of free educational events that promote sustainability and positive environmental change on the ONCA Barge. This funding supported our core education work until 2022, enabling us to develop our vision for an accessible space for creative environmental education for East Brighton.
