At ONCA we recognise how mainstream art, culture and education systematically privilege white and Eurocentric ideas and perspectives, and want to use our platform to challenge this.

Building on ONCA’s recent Visionary Fictions and Lost Species Day programmes, which aimed to platform decolonial perspectives, and our Graduate Monthly project that supports emerging artists’ development, we have applied for Arts Council funding to run a 6 week summer school project for artists in August & September 2019.

There is NO fee to apply. We have applied for Arts Council funding for this project and will know the outcome by Friday 21st June.  Please be aware that should we be unsuccessful in securing Arts Council funding this project will not go ahead in this form.

OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

We are seeking applications from artists who challenge white, colonial and/or Eurocentric aesthetics and narratives through their practices to co-author a framework for an experimental professional artist development programme. The project will support up to 5 artists by offering bespoke sessions with facilitators, mentors and members of the ONCA team to develop a summer school that provides the resources to create more inclusive creative practices. The emphasis is on process rather than outcomes, but the intention is to generate learning resources that can be shared and used to inform future iterations of the summer school in years to come.

We actively encourage applications from artists who identify as people of colour (POC) and by this we mean a person who does not identify as white or of European heritage.

The selected artists will ultimately dictate the form the project takes, but a suggested working structure for the 6 week period is:

Phase 1 – Research & Development (weeks 1 – 3):
Artists meet 2-3 days a week for facilitated sessions with mentors to generate initial ideas

Phase 2 – Testing Ideas (week 4):
Scratch week to test out ideas and get feedback from the public, mentors, other artists, ONCA team etc.

Phase 3 – Public Engagement (weeks 5 & 6):
Artists present a work in progress version of the summer school in the gallery which which will be open to the public

Eligibility

• Applications for this residency are open to people based within the UK
• Applications are accepted from all art disciplines

Artist fees

• Each artist will receive £1000 (to include travel & accommodation) – Please note we are not able to provide additional funds towards travel or accommodation costs, however we can assist artists travelling from outside Brighton / East Sussex to find cheap accommodation
• A separate £1000 materials budget for the project has been allocated to be shared amongst the group

Artists will also have access to the ONCA Gallery & ONCA Barge as a shared working / studio space at various points during the project.

Project requirements

• Artist are required to be present for 3 group sessions each week, days/times and lengths of these sessions are flexible and can be agreed once the groups availability is known
• One solo interview & one group interview for ONCA’s blog/website during project
• Each artist to lead on one public event presenting ideas/work in progress developed during the initial phases of the project
• One blog post reflecting on the project
• Provide learning resources developed during the project with the ONCA team for inclusion in an evaluation report that will then be shared with project partners
