THE ARTIST & THE OTHERWORLD: An evening with mythologist Dr Martin Shaw

THE ARTIST AND THE OTHERWORLD: Enchantment, Ecstasies, Negotiation

Join author and mythologist Dr. Martin Shaw for an evening on the subject of the Otherworld. Drawing on the ancient role of the storyteller he asks: what is the contract that the artist draws up with such a place? Do we need to re-negotiate? By The Otherworld, Shaw refers to a zone encountered in wilderness, ritual, mystical experience and epiphany. It is also a place that brings illumination when a culture is in deep trouble, myth insisting that genius comes from the margins.

Using stories, poetics and examples from Joseph Beuys to Mirabai, Shaw will invoke the notion of negotiation that comes with such journeys. How do we court rather than be consumed by such an endeavour? What is the difference between a mystic and a magician? What does any of this have to do with reforging culture in the face of climatic and economic duress? This event will be essential for anyone with a love of the arts, wilderness and story.
