Sarah Edmonds: Alphabetown

15 August 201823 August 2018

Sarah Edmonds Roundabout Illustration

Illustrator Sarah Edmonds is creating a town – come and help her build it!

During this lively interactive exhibition, the gallery will be transformed into an imaginative Information Centre. Visit and find out more about this work in progress town – see its landmarks, meet the locals and add your own suggestions to the noticeboard.

Sarah Edmonds Alphabetown Welcome Sign

Alphabetown is an ongoing project, with a building, location or character for each letter. It made its first appearance in Worthing last year, followed by a residency at Oxford’s Story Museum for two months earlier this year. As the imaginary town travels around it picks up inspiration from its host neighbourhood – expect plenty of winding lanes, vibrant characters, excellent views and of course seagulls in the Brighton edition!

Visitors are encouraged to become architects as well as tourists and add their own points of interest to the growing town. What places or spaces would you build if you could invent or improve a town? You are invited to share the best bits of memorable towns, places you’ve called home and the community that surrounds you.

This interactive exhibition is a journey into Sarah’s colourful mind, with building blocks to play with, postcards to send and workshops to take part in. Put on your hard hat and let your imagination run riot!

Suitable for all ages.

Bird Painting in Alphabetown // Saturday 18 August, 3 – 4:30pm

Sarah is well known for her bird illustrations, and Alphabetown has plenty of feathered residents. This workshop will be your chance to find out a bit about Sarah’s creative process using ink, watercolour and crayon. From garden to tropical species you’ll create a small collection of original pieces to take home. Suitable for ages 6+, all children must be accompanied. Fold a Paper Town // Wednesday 22 August, 3 – 4:30pm

Invent your own mini town inspired by the exhibition. Sarah will guide you through the process of making a folded book from scratch, cutting out a skyline to shape the pages like roof tops. We will then fill the towns with landmarks, animals and stories using drawing and collage. Participants will take home their own book that can be added to, written in and also stood up like a mini theatre set. Suitable for ages 6+, all children must be accompanied. Tickets £8 for one adult and child available via Eventbrite. See here for more info.

About the artist:

Sarah Edmonds is a self taught illustrator and designer based in Worthing.

She hails from the Welsh borders, where she spent much of her childhood adventuring around farmyards and forests which fed her imagination very well indeed!

Her portfolio includes hand drawn maps, mischievous puns, colourful alphabets and curious characters, produced for clients such as children’s publishers, museums, national parks and charities. To create her work she combines the hand drawn with the digital, enjoying bold colours, hand made textures and wobbly lines full of warmth and character. Much of Sarah’s inspiration comes from the natural world, people watching and mid century design.

In 2013 she was awarded a summer artist residency with Kultivera in Tranås, Sweden, and since then have worked freelance as an illustrator. Alongside her commissioned and personal projects and exhibitions, Sarah produces her own collections of playful illustrated gifts.
