Rachel Henson: Shimmer
8 November 2022
6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Join Rachel Henson for a conversation and interactive sharing of ‘shimmer’ found in nearby wild during The Living Coast artist residency co-supported by Fabrica and ONCA.
Rachel’s practice came out of solo free walking as a way of dealing with difficult feelings. Walking out from the city she noticed seeing and hearing more keenly, a widening of attention, an expansion, often euphoric, that often helped. She began to observe things that move in a landscape through the lens, taking the visual phrases into photo-animation, and inventing means of showing the work immersively in situ or in ways that involve the viewer’s physicality.
During The Living Coast artist residency, she explored three urban fringe sites, Benfield Valley, Coldean and Waterhall, making moving-image phrases of what she termed ‘shimmer,’ the hard-to-define euphoric qualities of these health-giving landscapes, and walked with local land guardians, the people who work with their communities to revel in and safeguard nearby wild, to hear their take on ‘shimmer’ and the processes in action when walking out.
For the sharing she wants to link some of these cinematic phrases with the movement of the viewer in physical space to see what relationships and sensations transpire.
