Making Fabric Roses with Claudette Atkinson
25 October 2023
6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Join us for a relaxed evening making fabric roses with artist Claudette Atkinson.
About the Workshop
Come and get creative with us! We’re making beautiful decorative roses out of fabric in a workshop led by artist Claudette Atkinson.
“The rose commemorates queer people of colour whose lives have been tragically cut short. It also represents beautiful individuals who have contributed to developing a dance style that is affirming of life, love and community. ”
– Claudette Atkinson
This evening session is a time to unwind whilst learning something new. You’ll use scraps of fabric to create the roses on canvas which you can then take away. There will also be an opportunity to explore Claudette Atkinson’s current exhibition, Brighton Is Burning, a celebration of community fostered through the queer Black dance tradition Voguing.
We have only got a handful of tickets available so please book your space, and if you can’t make it then let us know so someone else can have the ticket. You don’t need to bring anything with you, all materials will be provided. However, if you have some fabric at home that you’d like to make into roses then bring it along.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Claudette Atkinson is an artist from London who has been living and working as a teacher supporting young people in special needs education in Brighton for the last 25 years. She grew up in a creative household, her mother being a crocheter and father a carpenter. Claudette remembers sitting around the table and drawing with her siblings. After attending art college and focusing on fashion design, Claudette worked in the fashion industry and then in performing arts as a dancer. During the pandemic, Claudette rediscovered her passion for creating art pieces and has not looked back since.
