Creating Wearable Sculptural Masks with Anna Perach

30 October 2021
1:00 pm
3:30 pm

Join artist Anna Perach for a creative exploration building wearable sculptural masks aboard the ONCA Barge.

During this two hour workshop, Anna will introduce the process of creating a 3D mask sculpture using hand stitch and patchworking fabric. No previous experience is necessary and all tools and materials will be provided. If you would like to bring your own fabric, you are welcome to do so.

About the artist

Anna Perach’s practice explores the dynamics between personal and cultural myths. She is interested in how our private narratives are deeply rooted in ancient folklore and storytelling, and her work interweaves feminine archetypes into sculptural hybrids in order to examine ideas of identity, gender, and craft.

Anna’s main medium of work is wearable sculpture and performance. Using a technique called tufting, she makes carpet textiles, which she transforms into wearable sculptures, examining how elements associated with the domestic sphere such as textiles and carpet operate as an extension of the self and reflect one’s heritage and gender role. In performances the tufted, domestic carpet serves as an external added layer of skin, which hides the physical body but exposes fragments of the self.

Anna Perach (1985, USSR) is a Ukrainian born Israeli artist living and working in London, UK. She holds an MFA in fine art (distinction) from Goldsmiths, University of London (2020). She has exhibited internationally at galleries including: White Cube gallery, London, UK, Live Works, Centrale Feis, Italy, Saatchi Gallery. London, UK and Larsen Warner gallery in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2020 she was a finalist at the Birth Rites Collection Biennial Competition for New Works and The Ingram Prize. Anna also received a grant for the production of new work from Procreate Project via the Arts Council England. Recent publications include Floorr Magazine and Calvert Journal.
