Cân y Coed Rainforest Symphony: Screening and Q&A with Cheryl Beer

2 September 2023
1:00 pm
4:30 pm

Join us at ONCA gallery to experience the Cân y Coed Rainforest Symphony film and a Q&A with Cheryl Cheryl Beer.

This August we’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to exhibit the work of Cheryl Beer in our window. With the support of an Unlimited Main Commission funded by the Arts Council of Wales, Cheryl spent a year working with the Welsh rainforests. Her work is informed by the narrative of her personal experience, where the decline in her ability to perceive the sounds of nature was the first indication of her sudden hearing loss. Once fitted with NHS hearing aids, she experienced first-hand how connection with nature impacts on wellbeing.

The CÂN Y COED Rainforest Symphony film will be played throughout the day, and there will be two time slots – 2.30pm and 4pm – for gallery visitors to talk to Cheryl via Zoom.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Wales-based sound artist Cheryl Beer composes music in collaboration with the biorhythms of nature in crisis. She does this by repurposing hearing aid and biomedical technology and notating conductivity, literally from within the natural world. Every musical note placed on the stave is led by the environment, thus empowering nature’s voice, centre stage. Interested in the relationship between sound, well-being and nature, her work raises awareness of our fragile ecologies by embodying a visceral sense of place.
