Black In Real Life: Mural Workshop

12 October
1:30 pm
3:30 pm

Join artist Nalo Solo for a workshop where you’ll create a collective mural exploring what practising anti-racism means in our communities.

As part of their upcoming exhibition, Black In Real Life, artist Nalo Solo is inviting you to take part in this workshop designed to encourage people of all backgrounds to create an anti-racist piece of art together.

During the session we’ll discuss what anti-Black racism is and how we can practice it in our homes and communities everyday. As a group, we’ll share our hopes for what equal societies and caring communities could look like in the future. You’ll be encouraged to make notes or quick sketches about anything that comes out of these discussions and put ideas onto paper. Later, we’ll use these words, notes, drawings and images to create a collage reflecting on practising anti-racist values and our innate human desire for unity, harmony and inclusion.

This collective messages will be expressed in a collage that will then form part of the Black In Real Life exhibition, open to the public. It will provide a space within the exhibition for visitors to add their own creatively expressed hopes for an equitable future.

About the artist

Nalo Solo is a visual artist, illustrator, graphic designer, writer and spoken word poet. Nalo’s work questions how to rebuild the self and surrounding community with authenticity and ethical practice whilst still stuck in regressive systems and negotiating the long term after effects of trauma on physical and mental health. Reaffirming the self whilst rejecting individualism. Nalo’s aim is to use creativity to repurpose negative experiences to uplift the marginalised and promote compassion.
