Call for Trustees

Deadline: Passed

O N C A is currently looking for dynamic and motivated individuals to join our board of trustees. This is a great opportunity to gain trustee experience within a dynamic, ambitious and heartfelt organisation.

ONCA is a Brighton-based arts charity that bridges social and environmental justice issues with creativity. We promote positive change by facilitating inclusive spaces for creative learning, artist support, story-sharing and community solidarity. ONCA Gallery works with artists, educators and organisations to co-deliver exhibitions, events and workshops that explore social and environmental issues. ONCA Barge at Brighton Marina is a community centred learning space that supports artist development and offers a programme of creative activities in East Brighton.

ONCA is currently looking for dynamic, motivated people to join our board of trustees. This is a great opportunity to gain trustee experience within a dynamic, ambitious and heartfelt organisation. At such a critical time in history, with rapid social and ecological change happening across the globe, our staff and trustees are working to assure ONCA’s development, sustainability and stability. We are recruiting a diverse pool of trustees who have knowledge, skills and expertise in the following areas:

  • Understanding and advocacy of decolonial and anti-racist practice
  • Curatorial experience
  • Marketing, communications and PR
  • Fundraising, business development and financial sustainability
  • Community and outreach programmes
  • East Brighton
  • Improving disabled accessibility and inclusion

We’re looking for trustees who are passionate about the work that ONCA does. To actively support the life of the organisation, all trustees:

  • Attend quarterly trustees’ meetings (either in person or via Zoom)
  • Act as ambassadors at relevant public/ networking events
  • Help fundraise and deliver an organisational strategy
  • Make links, introductions and partnerships where relevant in order to support and develop ONCA’s financial sustainability
  • Participate in the life of ONCA by coming to events and organisational development workshops etc. where possible
  • Support, where relevant, an individual member of the staff team with specific expertise

If you have time and energy and can bring your experience to meaningfully contribute to ONCA’s wellbeing, we would love to hear from you.  We are looking for collaborators whose expertise, experience and insights can inform our thinking and shape progress. We expect our trustees to be informed and up to date about our work, act as ambassadors and share networks and contacts to further enable our work. At all times we expect confidentiality to be respected regarding sensitive information.

We’re particularly keen to hear from people with an interest in decolonial and anti-racist practices – these inform the core of our work around environmental justice. In addition, we are also looking for people to assist and support our work at the ONCA Barge community space in East Brighton.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

It is vital for ONCA to have a diverse board. We are therefore particularly interested to hear from individuals who self-identify as being in any marginalised groups. ONCA is an equal opportunities employer. We acknowledge structural exclusion in the arts and are actively striving to make ONCA a more inclusive organisation. We are keen to encourage applications from people who may face barriers to opportunities in the arts (e.g. BME, LGBTQ+, disabilities). If you have a disability and would prefer to apply in a different format or would like us to make reasonable adjustments to enable you to be involved as a trustee, please contact or call the office on 01273 607101.

CURRENT TEAM

Our current trustees are Laura Coleman (Founder and Chair of Trustees), Michelle Westbury, Julie Doyle, Eva Coleman, Helena Joyce and Clare Whistler.
