2020 marks the end of the UN Decade on Biodiversity, and is an opportunity to reflect on the state of wildlife and conservation both globally and locally.
A coalition of local environmental and cultural organisations are preparing to launch Nature2020 – a year-long programme of events and activities to celebrate and highlight the natural environment of The Living Coast: Brighton and Lewes Downs’ UNESCO designated world Biosphere.
Supported by Brighton & Hove City Council, Nature2020 aims to actively engage more people in the conservation of local nature, supporting people from all walks of life to learn about, enjoy and care for The Living Coast.
“UNESCO World Biospheres are designated as global examples of sustainable development, with nature conservation, environmental engagement and education as part of their key purpose. Nature2020 is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to celebrate and learn about our world class environment of Downs, towns and coast, bringing people and nature together to inspire a positive future, today. Together we are The Living Coast.”
– Sarah Dobson, The Living Coast Biosphere Programme Manager
The Nature2020 steering group includes: Brighton & Hove City Council; University of Brighton; Dorothy Stringer School; Royal Pavilion & Museums; ONCA; Sussex Wildlife Trust; University of Sussex; The Living Coast (TLC); Big Nature and Butterfly Conservation Sussex.
“We’re excited to be part of this amazing project that will help make The Living Coast more accessible and understandable to thousands of people, encourage communities to celebrate and care for it, and link our local places with the vital global story of environmental change and care.”
– Persephone Pearl, ONCA Co-director
Local organisations and groups are invited to host events as part of Nature2020. Any organisation interested in taking part is welcome to attend the Nature2020 pre-launch networking event at the University of Brighton’s Grand Parade cafe at 4.30pm on Wednesday October 9th. The event will be facilitated by the steering group and there will also be free kombucha provided by Old Tree.
