Top Cat Spotlight: Headblush Glitta

Interview with Sofaya Hussein

Headblush is a Brighton-based makeup business which provides an eco-friendly Glitter Bar service. Headblush has kindly provided ONCA eco-glitter for everyone coming to our upcoming makeup workshop with Umber Ghauri.

What inspired you to create Headblush?

I began Headblush back in 2016 when looking to go self-employed for the sake of my own financial independence. Makeup has always been a passion of mine – I’ve done photoshoots with friends acting as makeup artist, stylist and photographer for as long as I can remember – so stepping in to makeup professionally was a natural progression. I’ve always enjoyed the creativity of makeup, the fun, freedom and transformative possibilities it holds.

What thoughts and decisions led you to create an environmentally friendly makeup product range?

When the environmental impact of traditional polyester plastic glitter became clear to me, there was absolutely no way that I could continue to use it personally or for clients within my business. I switched to exclusively biodegradable glitter as soon as possible. Similarly, I am always trying to reduce the use of single-use plastics in my day-to-day life, so carrying this over into my business made complete sense. In September 2018, I re-launched Headblush Glitta as an entirely eco-friendly service, using only biodegradable glitter in our products and services, no single-use plastics at the Glitta Bar and plastic-free packaging and postage materials. It took me some time to break down every part of my business and switch to eco-friendly materials, but it was worth it!

Headblush says that makeup has the power to be transformative? Can you elaborate on this idea?

As a visual medium, makeup can be so powerful. It can allow us to see and feel new realities, to express our identity, to shape-shift and try on new things or ways of being. The way I see it, the idea of natural makeup is a contradiction. There is nothing natural about makeup, and that’s the beauty of it. It’s a tool to play with that’s ever-changing. The ethos at Headblush is that there is no ‘right’ way to do makeup – there are infinite ways of making up a face and all of them are completely valid. Headblush encourages people to see the beauty and possibility in makeup rather than focusing only on the newest, trendiest techniques.

What do you find most rewarding about running your own eco-friendly business?

It is incredibly rewarding to be my own boss, not only for my own financial independence, but because it allows me to do things the way I think they should be done. To create a business that is queer and accepting above all, that is always striving to be better. I have complete creative freedom on what I choose to put out there, which can be really scary but is always worth it. I’m so lucky to have a team of glitter artists that I can depend on – it was always a goal of mine to be someone’s boss and to be a good one. I couldn’t have gotten where I am without them.

What services does Headblush offer?

Headblush offers personal makeup services for bright and bold babes of any gender for all occasions; editorial makeup for brands and individuals such as performers; creative learning for those who would like to develop their skills (based on the kind of makeup that they would like to wear rather than how things are supposedly meant to be done); an eco-friendly Glitter Bar for all sorts of events such as parties, weddings, hen do’s and corporate events using exclusively biodegradable glitter and no single-use plastics; and finally, eco-friendly biodegradable glitter products for your makeup bag and kit created for ease of use with zero-plastic packaging and postage.
