Muralism: Art that Breaks Walls
25 March 2023
3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Join us for an event exploring mural art as a powerful tool for social change and its past, present and future within resistance movements.
Colombian artist LILOPHILIA will give a talk about their love of print-making and how this serves their interest in Black feminist activism and advocacy for communities at risk. We’ll then hear from Gustavo Chávez Pavón, a muralist with over 20 years of experience rooted in the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Mexico, to understand how works emerge as collective processes in collaboration with social movements.
Afterwards there will be the opportunity to come together to think through and plan a communal mural for a location in Brighton. We’ll use the insights of LILOPHILIA and Gustavo Chávez Pavón to guide this process, creating a communal mural that conveys taking care of Mother Earth through a socially critical lens.
There will also be the opportunity to buy prints from LILOPHILIA on the day.
This event has been organised by climate justice activist Helena Müllenbach Martínez in collaboration with ONCA.
