In, Among and Between من الى عن على في – Launch event

26 November 2021
4:00 pm
7:00 pm

Winners of ONCA’s Lost Species Day 2021 commission, A.MAL is a curatorial platform exploring ecology, migration and post-coloniality through speculative art and research projects. Please join us at the gallery for the opening of A.MAL’s new installation – In, Among and Between.

For this exhibition – In, Among and Between من الى عن على في – A.MAL (Leila Gamaz, Elodie Sacher and Younes El Hossaini [of 560 Zoom], Sabrina Mumtaz Hasan and Jessica El Mal) were keen to contextualise extinction within contemporary global – in particular post-colonial – relations and climate justice especially in the context of North Africa. As such, the focus of the exhibition is on both extinct species – for example the Barbary lion and the North African elephant – and endangered species such as Gelidium Sesquipedale (a red algae species), sea cucumber and sardines. Capitalism, which is inherently racial and exploitative, has fuelled these losses and follows a trail back to European and colonial influence and the desire to extract and hunt the ‘exotic’. This plays out in neocolonial and paternalistic relations between the Global North and South today.

Join us for the opening event of this exhibition where some of the collective will be in attendance.

Booking is not require but please note that capacity is limited and you may need to wait outside to gain access – seating can be provided whilst you wait.

This commission is supported by a collaboration with historian Dr Sadiah Qureshi, in conjunction with her British Academy Mid-career Fellowship, and Arts Council England.
