Eating the Other: Poetry Workshop with Subira Wahogo

Join our 2018 Green Curtain Award winner Subira Wahogo for a poetry workshop that explores the relationships between gender, race, exotification and food.
“There was overall agreement that the message that acknowledgment and exploration of racial difference can be pleasurable represents a breakthrough, a challenge to white supremacy, to various systems of domination. The overriding fear is that cultural, ethnic, and racial differences will be continually commodified and offered up as new dishes to enhance the white palate – that the Other will be eaten, consumed, and forgotten.”

Subira is ONCA’s Poet in Residence this March as part of our International Women’s Day exhibition: Desire & Resistance.
Tickets for this workshop are Pay what you can, and the money raised will go towards the cost of materials for Subira installation and live performance of Coffee and Cream.

Subira is a defiantly queer, unapologetically Black spoken word poet and activist. Their work weaves together the personal and political, through experiences and imaginations, spoken with rage, softness and laughter.
