Procession for Steller’s Sea Cow

1 December 2018
3:00 pm
6:00 pm

Every year on and around November 30, people hold memorial events in honour of extinct and disappearing species.

This year at the ONCA Gallery we will mark Remembrance Day for Lost Species with an exhibition and talks series in the gallery that explores the links between biodiversity and social and racial justice.

On Saturday 1 December on the Barge, our floating learning space for East Brighton, join us to gather and pay respects to the sea and its lost and missing denizens. Come and make sea creature masks, then head out to the beach together for a Lost Species Day procession in memory of Steller’s sea cow (extinct 250 year ago), and in honour of seas and sea creatures here and everywhere.

There will be a life-size original drawing of a Steller’s sea cow by Sonia Shomalzadeh on display on the Barge, made especially for Lost Species Day 2018. Sonia makes life size drawings of endangered marine species. Most of the drawings are temporary and disappear over time, adding to the message about extinction and the loss of incredible creatures around the world.

This event is free and all are welcome.
