ONCA is pleased to announce a residency opportunity (on the ONCA Barge) in November 2018 for up to three POC artists (any artform) to create works responding to the theme of biodiversity, racial justice and environmental justice, to be shared at ONCA between Nov 28 and Dec 16. The exhibition will be curated by Imani Robinson, artist and member of SYFU Collective (sorryyoufeeluncomfortable).

Remembrance Day for Lost Species (or RDLS, or Lost Species Day), 30 November, is a chance each year to explore the stories of extinct and critically endangered species, cultures, lifeways, and ecological communities. ONCA has been one of the lead organisations supporting RDLS from the outset.

However, the ways in which biodiversity loss is presented in mainstream discussions are often dominated by white-western narratives and exclusionary of people of colour. This is why we’re seeking new ways to improve Lost Species Day’s articulation of the links between biodiversity loss, environmental injustice and racism.

On Tuesday October 9th, 6 – 8pm, there will be a preliminary open creative workshop for any POC participants who are interested in applying for the Lost Species Day residency. The session will:
– explore the intersections of racial and environmental justice
– invite participants to share their own narratives through creative activities
– explain what Lost Species Day is
– answer any questions about the residency

We’re pleased to welcome historian Professor Vinita Damodaran from University of Sussex to the workshop, to talk about colonial and decolonial environmental projects in India and about environmental and racial justice more broadly.

**No prior knowledge or experience of working with these themes is required.**

The workshop is free to attend. It’s for participants who identify as people of colour. Applications for this residency and admittance to this event are open to all people of colour based within and outside Brighton & Hove. ‘Person of Colour’ or POC is a term used to a describe a person who is not white or of European heritage.
