SQUIDCUT

SQUIDCUT – WHEN FASHION MEETS SCIENCE

Fashion Designer Lilia Yip sees fashion as a poetic form of communication, activism and collaboration, with an emphasis on conceptual cutting, alternative representation and innovative ethical practice. SQUIDCUT is a collaboration between artists Lilia Yip, Nicol Vizioli and Jessica Kneipp.

Lilia Yip’s collection investigates her fascination with squid and synthetic biology – a new area of science that deals with the reconstruction of nature.

We now possess the ability to alter and create new organisms that function to our design. But what if we go too far?

In response to this fear and fascination, her collection uses the lab coat as a starting point for both artwork and pattern cutting. The lab coat is abstracted into various cuts as it fuses with circular squid shapes.

Digital imagery has been created using microscopic photos provided by synthetic biologist Matthew Jones who researched the squid’s iridescent colour changing properties.

The exhibition will showcase the SQUIDCUT garments and cutting, with artwork made in collaboration with photographer Nicol Vizioli and filmmaker Jessica Kneipp.

 The True Cost

Saturday 25th July, 2pm: The True Cost (Film Screening)

As part of the exhibition, Lilia will host a screening of The True Cost, a recently released fashion documentary film. The True Cost pulls back the curtain on the untold fashion story and asks us to consider, “who really pays the price for our clothing?” This will be followed by a short discussion with fashion activist and designer, Isabel Roffe-Silvester, who is part of the Brighton and Hove Fair Trade Steering Group.

Donations would be most welcome, and will be divided between ONCA and Labour behind the Label, a not-for-profit cooperative that supports garment workers’ efforts worldwide to improve their working conditions.
