DESCRIPTION:For our final Curious Kids workshop\, we’ll be coming together to look forward into next year and all the joys it might bring\, by making 2025 calendars. You’ll be creating collages from ONCA’s vast collection of environmental magazines\, to create 12 pieces of expressive original artwork – one for each month of the coming year. \nYou can dedicate your artworks to extinct or endangered species for Remembrance Day For Lost Species\, or in celebration of our more-than-human planet\, rifle through our 20 year-span of eco magazines\, with free reign to cut\, stick and merge your way into 2025. We’ll also have paints and other art materials to bring your designs to life! By the end\, everyone will have their very own calendar to take home along with collage materials to keep the fun going at home. This session will be led by ONCA’s community artist\, Ishtar Parrish Wain. \nCurious Kids is a workshop programme for 6 – 11 years olds taking place between autumn and winter at ONCA. The workshops provide vital opportunities for social connections and creative play\, crucial for childhood development and positive wellbeing\, while reducing barriers to accessing art. \n\nThe workshop is free to attend but all children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session\, with no more than two children per one adult in attendance. You only need to book tickets for children. SUMMARY:Climate Café (18-30s)
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to be holding another Climate Café for 18-30 year olds. This nourishing space is where we come together and safely explore our feelings around the ecological crisis as a community of young people. \nDuring the session you’ll be guided through reflective exercises including a sound meditation and journaling to help notice and describe your feelings in relation to the ecological crisis and other social injustices it is interconnected with. In the spirit of collective care and sustaining action for climate justice\, we will then hold space to talk about the realities of living as young people in a time of multiple crises and continuing capitalist\, colonial and patriarchal legacies of violence. We’ll be bringing our attention to the effects of greenwashing on the personal level as well as considering its role within society at large. It’s a space for listening\, talking and expressing what we feel whether that be a rant or rage or maybe it’s curiosity and joy. All emotions are welcome. \nAfter the session we’ll settle into some simple weaving\, creating god’s eyes from foraged sticks and thread. Here you’ll have the chance to chat and connect with your city neighbours in more depth. This is a time for sharing resources and actions\, perhaps you want to return to earlier conversations\, or just have a giggle. \nAlongside the craft activity we’ll be sharing a communal vegan meal and fresh herbal tea will be available all evening. You don’t need to bring anything unless you want to\, everything will be provided. If you have any allergies or accessibility requirements then please email maddy@onca.org.uk\, thank you. \nPlease note: our facilitators are not mental health professionals and have varied levels of training facilitated by Climate Psychology Alliance and Grassroots Suicide Prevention. \n

SUMMARY:Climate Café (for 18-30s)
DESCRIPTION:We’re back with another Climate Café at ONCA. But this time it’s specifically tailored to folks between the ages of 18 to 30 years. Gather with us the night after the summer solstice to reflect\, discuss and witness each other as we collectively move through a time of huge planetary change. \nDuring the session you’ll be guided through meditative and reflective activities like journaling to explore emotions relating to climate and any other social injustices it interconnects with. In the spirit of collective care and sustaining action we’ll delve into the realities of existing as young people in a time of multiple crises and continuing colonial legacies of systemic violence. We’ll use a mixture of writing and talking as ways to express our lived experiences\, concerns and desires to find common ground as a community of city neighbours. This is a space as much for joy as it is for rage or confusion and anything in between. \nAfter the session\, we’ll create a collage together using magazines\, newspapers\, natural and recycled materials. Here you’ll have the opportunity to get creative\, chat and connect in more depth. This is a time to share resources and actions\, perhaps you want to return to conversations from the earlier rounds! Alongside this will be a communal meal of seasonal salads\, breads and fresh herbal tea. \nYou don’t need to bring anything with you unless you want to. All materials will be provided. \nWe’re asking for a donation of £2 per ticket to cover the ingredients for a shared meal however if this makes the event inaccessible to you then please select a free ticket. \nPlease note: our facilitators are not mental health professionals and have varied levels of training facilitated by Climate Psychology Alliance and Grassroots Suicide Prevention. \nACCESSIBILITY\nThe gallery is wheelchair accessible but the toilet is up five stairs. There is an accessible toilet at Yellow Book Bar\, 100 metres from the gallery. For more information or to ask a question please email info@onca.org.uk or call 01273 607101.

SUMMARY:Jennifer Uchendu & Sarah Ray: Launching The Eco-anxiety in Africa Project
DESCRIPTION:ONCA is thrilled to host Jennifer Uchendu in conversation with Sarah Jaquette Ray to mark the launch of The Eco-anxiety in Africa Project (TEAP). \nTo coincide with the launch of The Eco-anxiety in Africa Project (TEAP) on February 2nd\, join Nigeria-based project founder Jennifer Uchendu in an online conversation with US-based author of A Field Guide To Climate Anxiety Sarah Jaquette Ray to discuss the climate change-related mental health issues facing communities in Nigeria and across the continent of Africa. \nTEAP seeks to understand and validate the experiences of eco-anxiety and other environment-related emotions in Africans. Environmental enthusiasts and climate advocates there feel a form of eco-anxiety that is unique to the African population. Africa is among the continents which are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis\, combined with biodiversity loss\, plastic and oil pollution\, as well as illegal wildlife trade. The erosion of environments\, cultures and histories has intense impacts on people’s emotions. The direct connections between the changing climate and other social challenges such as increased spread in communicable diseases\, food insecurity\, community displacement etc. are not always obvious; TEAP intends to raise awareness of these issues while making space for dialogue\, support and self-care with young people\, women\, farmers\, frontline workers and environmental practitioners who are consistently exposed to the reality and potential future threats. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\nJennifer Uchendu is an ecofeminist and sustainable development advocate based in Lagos. She is the founder of SustyVibes\, a youth-led organisation making sustainability actionable and relatable to young people. Jennifer’s interests lie at the intersections of youth\, women and climate action. She researches and advocates on issues around climate justice\, art\, youth and eco-anxiety. \nWebsite \nSarah Jaquette Ray is professor and chair of environmental studies at Humboldt State University\, on Wiyot territory in Arcata\, California. Her work focuses on the environmental humanities\, climate justice pedagogy\, and climate psychology. She is author of two books\, The Ecological Other: Environmental Exclusion in American Culture\, and most recently\, A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety: How to Keep Your Cool on a Warming Planet. She publishes and speaks extensively on the topics of emotions\, climate justice\, and youth activism\, and is currently working on a project to help educators inculcate existential skills that students will need to survive and thrive in a climate-changed world\, An Existential Toolkit for Climate Justice Educators. \nWebsite \nACCESSIBILITY\nThe discussion will be hosted via a Zoom meeting. Unfortunately due to limited resources\, it is conducted in the English language only. It will be recorded\, transcribed and shared online afterwards. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your access needs\, please contact info@onca.org.uk. \nIf possible\, we invite you to make a donation when you reserve your space at this event. Money raised will go to TEAP.

SUMMARY:Lost Species Day 2021: Voicing Silence - intergenerational workshop
DESCRIPTION:Family/intergenerational workshop to explore feelings surrounding biodiversity loss\, and the power of individual and collective action. \nJoin artist Lou Chapelle for a creative intergenerational workshop and a private view of her collaborative holographic video piece ‘Voicing Silence’ created with University of Leeds\, Manchester Museum\, and Corridor8. \nYou’ll be invited to play with poetry\, stop motion and collages to give forms to the complex emotions associated with the current environmental crisis and how it is affecting us all\, from animals\, insects\, and plants species\, near home and far away. \nAs well as expressing feelings of grief\, sadness or anger\, we’ll look at how these emotions can fuel action and we’ll aim to turn them into collective creative power! \nThis workshop will be suitable for all ages from 7 years upwards (younger siblings also welcome). \nAbout Lou Chapelle\n“I am a cross disciplinary artist\, weaving socially engaged and participatory approaches with digital and new technologies. I work in collaboration with people and communities – local or global\, established or imagined for the time of a project – to create collective rituals and objects that question and re-invent our sense of belonging. By becoming part of my work\, people are given tools to connect with one another and experience the everyday from a collective perspective. The exchange between the materials and the people that form the artworks is the key ingredient for the creative alchemy to happen. Individual feelings and stories become interwoven into sound\, video\, or visual pieces\, often coming together in multilayered forms.” \nWebsite \nAccessibility\nThis workshop will be held in person on the ONCA Barge at Brighton Marina. The lower deck is not wheelchair accessible. The upper deck is accessible. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your access needs\, please contact info@onca.org.uk. \nIf possible\, we invite you to make a donation when you reserve your space at this event. Money raised through the Lost Species Day 2021 events programme will go to Pacific Climate Warriors and the SustyVibes fund for climate anxiety in Africa.

SUMMARY:Bats About Data: Curiosity Club workshop with Cliff Hammett
DESCRIPTION:For this experimental art/science workshop aboard the ONCA Barge\, we will look at how to gather data about bats\, and ways to share this data in creative and unusual ways. \nBats live all around us\, roosting in trees and our homes\, foraging for insects in parks and woodland. But they are also very vulnerable to humans changing the environment – for instance\, by demolishing buildings they roosts in\, or placing too much lighting where they feed. Bats are protected under law. But we can only protect them if we know where they are and how well they are doing – and can communicate this to others. \nAt this creative workshop with artist/researcher Cliff Hammett\, we will learn about ways to gather data about bats\, and explore how we might share this data in creative and unusual ways. First\, we will look at the methods used by ecologists to gather information about bats. How do they work\, why are they important\, and can they us all we need to know about them? If not\, what gets missed out when we gather data? \nThen we will imagine ways in which we could communicate data about bats back to the bats themselves. This will help us consider how humans and bats experience the world differently\, and how data can be expressed to those who might not otherwise engage with it. Using sound and sculpture\, we will craft data encounters that engage the senses in unexpected ways. \nThis free workshop is part of the Curiosity Club programme organised by ONCA and TDC. It’s suitable for age 11 to adult. Young people are welcome to bring their adults\, or to attend independently – just let us know who’s coming. All Curiosity Club facilitators are DBS checked. Please email info@onca.org.uk with questions or to tell us about any access needs. Click here for Barge location and venue info. \nAbout the facilitator\nCliff Hammett is a creative tinkerer and computational meddler\, who conducts inquiries through creating software\, contraptions\, and collective activities. For his Nightsniffing project\, Cliff produced a pair of ‘datasniffers’ that are able to sniff out data about the area you are exploring and bring it to life with sound. They are inspired by experiences of bat walking – exploring a space with a special sonic device to find hard-to-see bats. While looking for hidden bats\, the datasniffer helps us find hidden data that might tell us something about how the area is changing – for bats and for us. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Youth Climate Summit: Visible Mending workshop
DESCRIPTION:This free sewing workshop will combine visible mending – a simple clothing repair technique – with conversation and creativity\, developing participants’ skills and building agency for change. \nThe session is part of DResscue\, ONCA’s online and in-person programme of sewing and mending workshops and educational community events. Sally Bourner and Persephone Pearl are running it as part of the fantastic Transform Our World Youth Climate Summit.  Simply go to the Transform Our World website\, sign up and log in to take part. \nEach participant will need:  \n\na holed/ torn garment or cloth to repair \na scrap of cloth to cover the hole \na needle \nembroidery thread (any colour)\n\nParticipants of all levels of experience will learn how to extend the lifespan of a torn or holed garment using just a needle\, thread and patch of cloth. As we stitch\, we will discuss fast fashion and its environmental and social impacts\, versus ‘slow’ and sustainable lifestyle activities. We’ll reflect on how creative activity can improve wellbeing as well as have positive environmental impacts. Takeaway messages from the session will be: reducing emissions through reducing waste; interwining fun\, positive action and creativity; cultivating an ethos of repair\, and framing repair as creative practice.

SUMMARY:London Mining Network's PhoneCycle Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are constantly being encouraged to update our smartphones and we should be asking what the true environmental and social costs are. \nHow can we all enjoy owning a smartphone yet cause minimal damage to people and planet? \nHow do we talk to each other about the problem of digital technology in an informed way? \nWhat is the relationship between mineral extraction for digital technology and environmental justice? \nLondon Mining Network’s PhoneCycle board game is designed to stimulate lively conversation about – and consider solutions to – the social and environmental problems of producing and disposing of digital technology. \nThis friendly and collaborative workshop is suitable for people of all ages. We particularly warmly encourage young people to attend – especially youth climate strikers. \nLondon Mining Network will also share news of some of their current projects and how young people may get involved in their work. \nAbout the facilitators\nLondon Mining Network (LMN) is an alliance of human rights\, development\, environmental and solidarity groups. \nWebsite
