SUMMARY:Private View: River Story
DESCRIPTION:Gather at ONCA gallery for the private view of River Story by photographic artist Benjamin Youd. \nSet within a single location\, River Story quietly observes the continuous changing of the seasons and the dichotomy of human presence in a natural environment\, along a winding river. It contemplates our desire to reconnect with the natural spaces and life that surrounds us\, after centuries of pursuing the ideology of a ‘dominion over nature’. Our movements are tentative and uncertain\, yet slowly we embrace the unity we need to survive. \nRiver Story is an important body of visual work for our time. Having formed collaboration with the environmental charities: Friends of the Earth\, Sussex Wildlife Trust\, Pesticide Action Network and The Ouse and Adur Rivers Trust\, Benjamin aims to inspire a deeper connection between people and the natural world by facilitating conversations around our relationship to nature\, and the environmental challenges\nwe face. \nThis in-person event offers a unique opportunity to connect with the artist and environmental charities. Don’t miss out on this exclusive chance to experience the magic of River Story. \nBook Tickets \n\nThis event is free to attend however there are limited spaces so if you can no longer make it\, please let us know by emailing info@onca.org.uk\, thank you.

SUMMARY:Far From Home: Exhibition Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch party of Far From Home an exhibition by Usva Inei and Bern O’Donoghue. We’re delighted to be opening this exhibition as part of Brighton Fringe 2024\, the livelist time in the city’s arts and cultural calendar. \nThe exhibition explores migrant narratives by presenting distinct stories through visual artworks but with common threads that explore identity\, borders and belonging. The title is taken from the Role-playing game Far From Home created by the Malaysian-based Game Designer Aaron Lim. “Far From Home is a game about immigrants and outsiders. It’s about exploring what it means to live and thrive in a culture that is not fully your own. It’s about how you piece together an identity drawing from multiple cultures\, yet never wholly belonging to either.” \nThe launch party offers an opportunity to talk about the exhibition alongside the artists in a relaxed atmosphere. Gather with us to celebrate the exhibition kicking-off a month of exciting Brighton Fringe events! As always it’s totally free to attend with the opportunity to buy drinks from the bar. \nBook Tickets Now \n  \n\nPhotograph of Entanglment an artwork by Usva Inei.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Launch Event - Lila Wordsworth: The Untangling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the exciting exhibition launch event of Lila Wordsworth: The Untangling on September 6 \nLila Wordsworth’s textile piece ‘The Untangling’ is a celebration of the profound impact the trawling ban is having on the Sussex seabed ecosystem. It is a tale of hope where the once shimmering kelp forests\, formed of giant seaweed plants reaching up to 3m high\, are starting to return to the area. The hand-sewn quilt in the window at ONCA is hand dyed with seaweed responsibly foraged from (and returned to) Brighton beach and features a poem written to celebrate the regeneration efforts. \nABOUT LILA WORDSWORTH\nLila Wordsworth is an interdisciplinary artist focused on salvaged beach materials such as seaweed\, fishing line\, rusted objects and plastic waste. She turns them into sculptures\, textiles and cyanotype prints and photographs. Her work is expressive in style\, embracing a contemporary aesthetic that combines both figurative and abstract elements. She is currently focused on exploring stories emerging from Brighton Beach as a liminal space where humans\, technology and the vastness of the sea meet. The work she is making through this exploration is co-created by the sea itself\, as it throws up gifts and garbage to tell its own tale. \nA self-taught artist\, Lila studied English and American Studies at the University of Sussex and worked as a secondary English teacher and later as an education officer before dedicating her time to her art practice. She has shown across the UK\, including the Hastings Art Museum\, Edinburgh & Oxford\, and her work is in featured in international private collections. In 2023\, She was awarded the Andrew Edney Bursary which supports Hampshire and Sussex artists developing their practice\, enabling Wordsworth to work with Serpentine curator Lucia Pietroiusti. She lives and swims in Brighton\, UK. \nImage credit: Lila Wordsworth

SUMMARY:Pakistan Floods: Solidarity Fundraiser Events Programme
DESCRIPTION:A third of Pakistan is under water due to the devastating floods that struck in recent weeks. Please come to ONCA to show your support\, learn about the systemic injustices and other issues behind the floods\, and contribute to the relief efforts and fundraiser. \nEntire villages have been swept away\, along with the majority of the country’s crops. More than a million people are homeless and urgently need help to survive\, while more rain is set to make conditions worse. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says he has “never seen climate carnage” on the scale at which Pakistan is suffering. Guterres and many commentators blame wealthier countries for contributing to the devastation. But what responsibility exactly do these wealthier nations bear? \nEVENTS PROGRAMME\nThursday 22 September\n\n5-8pm: Performance poetry and music night curated by legendary local queer feminist art collective Devil’s Dyke Network \n6-7pm: Online panel discussion chaired by Dr Nichola Khan\, Co-director of the Centre for Spatial\, Environmental and Cultural Politics\, University of Brighton. (Watch from home via Zoom or Facebook Live\, or from the gallery with DDN.) \n\nFriday 23 September\n\n11am-1pm: Circle Weaving with Saj Fareed \n\n3-5pm: Zines Zinedabad workshop with Soofiya\n\nSaturday 24 September\n\n1-4pm: Film screenings – Voice from the Roof of the World documentary series \n4-5pm: Ecofeminism and Pakistani Women’s Poetry workshop with Manjot Dhaliwal \n\nArtwork fundraiser\nThroughout the events\, artists will be selling low cost prints to raise funds for Pakistan – these will be printed to order for a minimum donation of £5.00 and poster prints on 100gsm. \nSoofiya\n \nAbout Soofiya: \nSoofiya’s design practice centres around illustration\, visual identity and book design\, with most clients tending to be in the arts\, cultural and activist sector. Soofiya’s art practice and writings aim to articulate a commentary on gender\, race\, politics and bodies through a DIY and therapeutically informed approach. Soofiya has worked as a lecturer in design and arts at Universities and HE institutions nationally and internationally in the UK and Xiamen\, China. Soofiya is currently an associate lecture at UAL on their MA Internet Equalities course as well as a sessional lecturer at Ravensbourne and Brighton University. \nAbinaya Kamalanathan\n \nAbout Abinanya: \n“Hello\, my name is Abinaya. I live in London and I’m passionate about children’s illustration. I create digital and hand drawn illustrations for children\, on subjects that affect children and to look at certain topics from a child’s point of view.” \nSabba Khan\n \nAbout Sabba Khan: \nSabba Khan is a visual artist and graphic novelist based in Newham\, London.\nPage 269 & 270 of Sabba Khan‘s graphic novel\, The Roles We Play\, is an artistic response to an excerpt of Allama Iqbal’s poem ‘Manzil Talash Kar’. The poem talks of coming face to face with one’s oppositions\, both metaphysical and worldly. We are invited to be brave\, and summon the courage from within to face whatever demons lie ahead. Later in the poem\, he proclaims “Every person is burning in the fire of oppositions. Search for the water that distinguishes that fire”. As the climate emergency comes to a head in places like Pakistan\, Bangladesh\, Haiti and Somalia\, it feels important to use these ancestral messages from the past to fuel our collective action.\n\nSaj Fareed\n \nOriginal A3 & A4 mindfulness drawings. \nAbout Saj: \nSaj Fareed is a British Asian slow artist and artist educator. She has developed her career working on a wide range of art education projects for museums\, galleries\, schools and many other establishments for over 25 years. Saj has a keen interest in promoting the arts and crafts to a wider audience and as a tool for creative expression and learning. The aim is to also empower and inspire individuals in their own creative process. Through her practice\, Saj takes inspiration from her desire to live a slower pace in her life and the importance of creative self-care for our wellbeing. \n  \nThese prints will be available to buy online soon. If you’re an artist and would like to sell you prints at this event and online via our website please email info@onca.org.uk. \nMore artists TBA. \nDonations\nAll of these events are drop in and free to attend but donations are encouraged. All proceeds will go to WDF (Women Democratic Front)a Pakistan-based\, independent socialist-feminist resistance movement\, providing aid to communities affected by flooding since 2018. \n___ \nImage credit: Amandeep Singh \nImage description: A crescent moon lies sideways\, like a boat\, on a watery blue background. SUMMARY:Launch event: To Mar or Enroot - Choosing the Path for Seeding the Pluriverse
DESCRIPTION:Join the artists at ONCA Gallery from 4 – 7pm on Thursday 9 June for the launch of ‘To Mar or Enroot: Choosing the Path for Seeding the Pluriverse’ by Mary Martin & Paccha Turner Chuji. \nThis diverse mixed media exhibition explores various potential impending byproducts of the Anthropocene\, and many which have already been imposed onto our hurting world. It takes as a baseline the war that capitalism has waged over the past centuries against the world’s majorities – both human and non-human. Its aims are twofold. First\, it seeks to provoke critical views on how the system’s recklessness and anthropocentric arrogance have disfigured the harmony and pluriversal* nature of Mother Earth. Second\, it seeks to support the healing of the Pluriverse by imagining alternative paths and giving creative voices to those who have had to metamorphose to survive our rapidly changing and disrupted worlds\, both internal and external. \n*The Pluriverse\, as the Zapatistas describe it\, is a world where many worlds fit\, which include the totality of the physical\, spiritual and liminal dimensions of life.  \nRead more about the exhibition and artists here. \n___ \nImage credit: artwork by Mary Martin & Paccha Turner Chuji \nImage description: a composite image of Mary Martin & Paccha Turner Chuji’s artwork. On the left a painting by Mary Martin portrays an orange dried stingray floating against a colourful mountainous landscape\, typical to the artist’s common subject matter of marine creatures. The mountains are various shades of blue\, from deep dark to very pale\, that blend into the bright clear sky. Dark\, warm shrubbery emerges from the bottom left hand corner. The second part of the composite image on the right is a painting by Paccha Turner Chuji\, depicting a colourful harmonious scene representing  blended worlds\, both good and bad – intertwining organically. This painting is a spiritual and expressive piece\, seen through the artist’s colour choice and mark making. Marine inspired blues flow throughout the image with illustrative lines and marks while bursts of warm yellows\, purples\, deep oranges\, maroon and pale green appear throughout the painting\, both juxtaposing and complementing each other. A small blue side profile of a face is seen\, peeking out from the flowing colours. The artist describes this as an exploration of how the subconscious expresses itself through the artistic process\, and this is seen throughout this liminal\, spiritual painting.

SUMMARY:In\, Among and Between من الى عن على في - Launch event
DESCRIPTION:Winners of ONCA’s Lost Species Day 2021 commission\, A.MAL is a curatorial platform exploring ecology\, migration and post-coloniality through speculative art and research projects. Please join us at the gallery for the opening of A.MAL’s new installation – In\, Among and Between. \nFor this exhibition – In\, Among and Between من الى عن على في – A.MAL (Leila Gamaz\, Elodie Sacher and Younes El Hossaini [of 560 Zoom]\, Sabrina Mumtaz Hasan and Jessica El Mal) were keen to contextualise extinction within contemporary global – in particular post-colonial – relations and climate justice especially in the context of North Africa. As such\, the focus of the exhibition is on both extinct species – for example the Barbary lion and the North African elephant – and endangered species such as Gelidium Sesquipedale (a red algae species)\, sea cucumber and sardines. Capitalism\, which is inherently racial and exploitative\, has fuelled these losses and follows a trail back to European and colonial influence and the desire to extract and hunt the ‘exotic’. This plays out in neocolonial and paternalistic relations between the Global North and South today. \nJoin us for the opening event of this exhibition where some of the collective will be in attendance. \nBooking is not require but please note that capacity is limited and you may need to wait outside to gain access – seating can be provided whilst you wait. \nThis commission is supported by a collaboration with historian Dr Sadiah Qureshi\, in conjunction with her British Academy Mid-career Fellowship\, and Arts Council England. \nCOVID-19\nThe following measures will be in place to keep staff and visitors safe: \n\nWindows and doors will be open to ensure the gallery is well ventilated\nA maximum of 12 people at any given time will be permitted in the gallery\, meaning you may have to queue outside whilst waiting to enter (chairs will be available for those who need them)\nWe ask that face coverings are worn in the gallery at all times\, unless you are exempt\nVisitors will be asked to observe social distancing whilst moving around the gallery\n\nPlease help stop the spread and keep our staff and visitors safe by not visiting the gallery if you or anyone in your household/bubble has Covid-19 symptoms\, has been told to self-isolate\, or received a positive test within the last 14 days. \n  \nImage credit: Photo of Barbary lion\, copyright expired Alfred Edward Pease\, 1893 \nImage description: an old black and white photograph of a male Barbary lion – a now extinct species. SUMMARY:Making Care Group Exhibition: Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:Making Care is a research project\, group exhibition and events programme showcasing work by artists exploring aspects of care and access provision through their practices\, pointing towards more just and equitable worlds against the backdrop of Covid and the inequalities it highlights. \nThis project asks how arts organisations can collaborate with – and care for – artists whose work explores themes of care. It centres access needs as opportunities for world-building and creative exchange\, rather than problems to solve. It aims to open dialogue with artists\, audiences and organisations about the transformative potential of DIY community care and access provision. \nThe Making Care artists – Josephine Chime\, Kyla Harris & Lou Macnamara\, Evan Ifekoya\, Keith Hennessy and Carmen Papalia & Heather Kai Smith – explore care and access in rich\, radical and varied ways.  Please join us for the opening event of their co-curated exhibition and programme. \nA BSL interpreter will be present during the event. \nCOVID-19\nThe following measures will be in place to keep staff and visitors safe: \n\nWindows and doors will be open to ensure the gallery is well ventilated\nA maximum of 12 people at any given time will be permitted in the gallery\, including staff members and interpreters\, meaning you may have to queue outside whilst waiting to enter (chairs will be available for those who need them)\nFace coverings must be worn in the gallery at all times\, unless you are exempt\nVisitors will be asked to observe social distancing whilst moving around the gallery\n\nPlease help stop the spread and keep our staff and visitors safe by not visiting the gallery if you or anyone in your household/bubble has Covid-19 symptoms\, has been told to self-isolate\, or received a positive test within the last 14 days. \nThis exhibition has been made possible thanks to the support of Arts Council England. \nImage credit: still image from ‘It’s Personal’\, 2020\, by Kyla Harris and Lou Macnamara.  \nImage description: Kyla’s fingers are interlocked as her hands are lightly clasped in the air.
