Wesley Goatley & Tobias Revell: Mephitic Air

15 September 20171 October 2017

Wes Goatley Installation

For this year’s festival Brighton Digital Festival, Creative Producer Laurence Hill and ONCA have co-commissioned Wesley Goatley & Tobias Revell to produce Mephitic Air, a site specific installation which measures air quality outside of ONCA gallery on one of Brighton’s busiest roads.

Wes Goatley Installation

Mephitic Air is a data sonification and visualisation installation which explores new immersive methods of understanding the local and global systems of air pollution, and the data through which it is measured. This work was originally made in consultation with the Environmental Research Group at King’s College London, and shown at Somerset House, London as part of Utopia 2016, and the London Design Festival 2016.

Wesley Goatley is a sound artist and researcher in critical data aesthetics. His practice examines opaque power and hidden processes in data and networked technologies through installations, objects, and talks, with regular exhibitions and events in mainland Europe and North America. He is currently undertaking a PhD through a scholarship from the Sussex Humanities Lab, University of Sussex, and he teaches Sonic Media on the University of Brighton’s Digital Media, Culture and Society MA.

Tobias Revell is an internationally exhibiting artist and Course Leader of MA Interaction Design Communication at the London College of Communication and Senior Lecturer in Critical and Digital Design for Information and Interface Design and Interaction Design Arts and a founding member of research consultancy Strange Telemetry. He is one half of Haunted Machines, a research and curatorial project curating Impakt festival 2017 in Utrecht, NL. He is undertaking a PhD in the Design Department at Goldsmiths, University of London.
